GTMS

Minimize

GTMS (General Train Movement Simulator) is under development for the Federal Railroad Administration by DecisionTek.  The simulator is designed to be a foundational component in the safety evaluation of plans for new products and systems related to Positive Train Control (PTC) and other new technologies.  GTMS incorporates a precision train movement simulation capability, a system-wide traffic control simulation capability and, upon completion, will support safety analyses through the prediction of railroad accidents and their severity.

Principal Components

Minimize

The principal components of GTMS are:

  • Train movement model that accounts for all the forces acting on trains and affecting their movements.  Train movement simulation includes detailed handling of controls by train crews.
  • Central dispatcher model that executes the railroad operations plan, safely separates trains, effects meets and passes, and effectively prevents train deadlock.
  • Safety model that simulates causal chains leading to accidents.  A risk analysis framework in GTMS incorporates a staged simulation methodology that predicts accidents while making optimal use of computer resources.  The simulation method yields reliable estimates of predicted accidents including the complete sequencing of events leading to accidents.
